How to design a green nursery

A nursery is the most important room to design and create efficiency. Oftentimes we forget how delicate and susceptible a baby is to the littlest things. This article will help those expecting learn how to design and create an ecofriendly space for your child.

Step 1: The Gameplan

Using graph paper, measuring tape and a writing utensil, begin to take measurements of your space. Measure from wall to wall as well as doorways and closets. When measuring your window, be sure to take the following measurements: from the floor to the window sill, from sill to head (top inside of window), from jamb to jamb (sides), and from exterior to exterior.

Once you have these measurements you can now have a better idea about furniture placement. On sheet of graph paper, mark the measurements (wall to wall, closets and doorways). Now on another sheet of paper, draw shapes to represent your key pieces. A rectangle can be your crib and changing table while a square can be your dresser/nightstand. This is where you think about the pieces you would like to incorporate into the space. **NOTE: These cutouts do not have to be to scale as it is just a placement tool.**

Step 2: Choose a Theme

Choosing a theme for your nursery is going to set the tone of the room for the next few years of the baby's life. You can do specific themes (i.e. fairy tale), but remember that it should be something that lasts. If you are looking for ways to make the room evolve with time try establishing a theme in the following areas: -Bedding -Wallpaper trim (as an alternative to painting) -Window treatments -Rug/Flooring -Art -Throws & Pillows
